Aurel Ymeti, PhD

R&D Director, Ostendum

After working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Twente, where he received his PhD, Dr. Aurel Ymeti founded his own company Ostendum.

Dr. Aurel Ymeti received a PhD in Applied Physics/Nanotechnology from the University of Twente, The Netherlands, in 2004, working on the development of ultrasensitive multichannel integrated optical sensing platforms. Subsequently, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the same University on development of portable diagnostic tools for staging of HIV infection in point-of-care settings. His research interests include nanotechnology, optical biosensors, microfluidics, point-of-care instrumentation, lab-on-a-chip devices and biomedical applications.

Aurel has (co)authored about 25 publications in refereed journals, peer-reviewed conference proceedings and books, is inventor of several patents and has presented 20 invited talks in international conferences. His work has been featured, among others, in MIT’s Technology Review, Nature, Le Monde and BBC Focus Magazine. Forbes Nanotech Report has highlighted his work as one of “13 Amazing New Nanotechnologies”.

In 2008 Aurel founded Ostendum, a spin-off company of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology of the University of Twente. Ostendum is a group of companies that focuses on the commercialization of extremely sensitive and label-free optical analysis methods for instantaneously determining the presence and concentration of micro-organisms and biomarkers based on Lab-on-a-Chip interferometric nanotechnology. As Chief Technology Officer, he is responsible for the research, technology development, product management and new business development. In 2011 he won with Ostendum the Young Technology Award, an award for fast-growing, innovative companies in the East of the Netherlands.

Aurel participated as a speaker in the 2012 PCDI Postdoc Retreat (STEM)
