Hugo-Jan Jansen PhD

 

Senior Advisor, Ministry of Defence


Hugo-Jan Jansen was born in Nijmegen in 1967. He studied Biology at the University of Nijmegen with the specialisation Microbiology and Molecular Microbiology.

In 1991, he started his Ph.D. at the Department of Preventive Dentistry of the University of Nijmegen to study the microbial interactions in protein and immunoglobulin degradation and its role in the development of periodontitis and periodontal abscesses. Part of the research he carried out in  Canada. He successfully defended his thesis in 1996.

Subsequently, he moved to the United Kingdom and held a position as a Research Associate at the Department of Clinical Dental Sciences of the University of Liverpool. In 1999 he became a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Microbiology, Utrecht University.

Then, in 2002 he started at the Ministry of Defence in his present job as a senior advisor (Micro)Biology & Infectious diseases. His current duties among others are supervising research in the area of biological agent detection, identification, diagnostics and medical countermeasures, consultancy and policy development on prevention and mitigation of infectious diseases, advising on issues related to mission preparedness, and teaching. He is the Netherlands representative on a number of NATO and European Defense Agency working groups.
